Bret McGatlin, Chatfield Senior High Varsity Head Coach, Program General Manager

Hello to the Chatfield Student Body, community, parents, alumni and all of those who cheer on the Burgundy and Silver of Chatfield Football!  Welcome to the 2018 Football Season!
I am extremely excited for this season as these young men have had an awesome off-season.  As always the off-season is long and can be grueling at times.  Through the several months of 6:30am workouts and whetere we endured Coach Kiescnick's Friday 4th quarter workouts or his grueling stair workouts our team found a way to pull together and push forward.  This summer we had a lot of success starting with the team of 15 kids that went to compete in the Danny Dietz Memorial Challenge and brought home the trophy for the first time in 4 years.  Also for the first time in my career here at Chatfield we won the 7on7 tournament hosted by Dakota Ridge.  Last, a congrats to our Rhinos (O and D Line) who competed in the Broncos Linemen Challenge and finished 2nd and were very close to defending their championship from a year ago.  This season will bring many challenges.  We will have to fill a lot of holes from the 2018 graduating class and we will be playing a much more challenging schedule filled with competitive games every week.  I am encouraged by our senior class and the growth they have shown over the past 8 months and am excited to see what these young men can do both on and off the field this season.

As Always I need to acknowledge some important people in my life that allow me to pursue my passion for coaching football.  First, I would like to thank our Principal, Chad Broer and Athletic Director Craig Aukland.  Mr. Broer was my athletic director for 8 years of my career and has always been a huge supporter of my vision and of our football program.  He has carried his passion and support into the role of principal at our school and I know under his guidance I show up to work everyday ready excited to be a Charger.  Mr. Aukland was an assistant in our football program for 10 years and we shared an office for the same amount of time.  We constantly bounced ideas off each other and he has always been a great friend and supporter.  I also need to thank and acknowledge our coaching staff.  I know this will sound crazy but we have 23 coaches on our entire staff and I love every single one of them.  These coaches have a passion for what they do and are all completely selfless.  These men have become some of my best friends and sacrifice so much for me and the kids to help this program be successful.  I must thank my mom and my dad for their unconditional love and for their support for not just me but for all of my brothers.  And last but definitely not least is my beautiful wife Tracy and my daughters Ella and Kenzey.  There is no way I could do this job without a supportive wife and family.  To Tracy; I know I come home late  smelling like a locker room every day and yet you still love me.  For Ella and Kenzey, thanks for allowing me to be with the boys for a time each day but just know I love our dance parties just as much.  Thanks again for supporting us and lets make the 2018 season a season to remember!  #chargerpride

Sincerely,

Coach McGatlin

VARSITY STAFFjeremy

Mark Bergdale, Running Backs

Coach Bergdale begins his twelfth year at Chatfield. This year, he will assist with the running backs. This will also be his twelfth year teaching English at Chatfield. He is supported in his coaching and teaching efforts by his wife Mary and his two grandsons Carter and Lucas.

Will Burger, Quarterbacks

“The 2018 season will be my 16th year coaching football at Chatfield Senior High School.  I am a graduate of Bear Creek High School class of 1989, where I played football and baseball.  I was extremely blessed to have earned a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Denver, before completing my studies at Metropolitan State College.  For the past 3.5 years, I have been working as a Supplier Development Manager for a global EPC firm specializing in mining and process facilities construction.  Family is the backbone to my life.  My lovely wife Cheryl and my two wonderful children, Morgan age 18 and Evan age 15, give me the support and drive to continue what I love to do, coach.  It is because of them that I get to be involved with the lives of all the great boys and girls who have come through the Chatfield football program. Let’s go Chargers!!!”

Patrick Elsenbast – Defensive Ends

I am a Chatfield alumnus, class of 2013. I also played football (linebacker/running back) at Chatfield during my time, under Coach McGatlin and a lot of the other coaches still on staff. After Chatfield, I went on to attend Colorado State University, where I started out as a walk-on for their football team, while majoring in History and Secondary Social Studies Education. I played in 35 games (at linebacker) during my five years of eligibility at CSU. As a junior and senior, I was chosen to represent the Rams as a Team Captain. I earned a full-ride scholarship and graduated with my bachelor’s degree (May 2017). I am currently finishing up my Masters Degree in Adult-Education and Training, I will graduate this December (2018). I am beyond blessed and excited to be apart of Chatfield’s football program this year. Let’s get to work.

Sam Stratton, Varsity Assistant (Quarterbacks)

The 2018 season will be my third year coaching quarterbacks for the Chargers and overall 13th year with the Chatfield program. After graduating from Chatfield in 2010, I continued my playing career at The University of Wyoming (GO POKES) and concluded my career with a brief stint in Germany. Outside of coaching, I am The Member Service Manager at Pura Vida Fitness and Spa in Cherry Creek.

My life has been deeply impacted by the coaches and mentors I've had throughout my football career- the reason I coach is for the opportunity to have the same impact on our young men. I look forward to an amazing 2018 season- Go Chargers!

Josh Schaefer – CO-Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs

The 2018 season will be my 4th year of coaching football at Chatfield. I am grateful for the opportunity to coach these young men, and hope to help them develop into great people on and off the field. I graduated from Green Mountain High School in 2005 where I played football and baseball. I attended Colorado State University from 2005-2009, and graduated in 2009 with a degree in Construction Management. Currently I work for a construction consulting company. Outside of football I enjoy spending time with my wife Tiffany, and our 1 year old son Henry. Tiffany is an awesome wife/mother, and I cannot thank her enough for her support during the football season. Go Chargers!

Mike “Gordo” Gordon, Offensive Line

I'm beyond excited to be starting my 12th year as a coach here at CSH. I graduated from Green Mountain High School in 1998 after winning a state title & earning individual honors as an offensive lineman. After graduation I spent a number of years running a family business before changing my path drastically, selling that business & becoming a coach & teacher, a job I loved for 10 years, but I have just recently begun a new adventure. I have been a real estate investor for a number of years but have recently added developer & broker to my list of real estate pursuits. Football & working with young people are amongst my life's great passions. I genuinely love my students and players & have developed quite a few life long friendships with them. Off the field & outside the classroom I love to read, work out & further develop my skills in one of my other passions as a professional photographer. But more than anything I love every minute I get to spend with my beautiful wife Terra and our little girl Sofia. I owe Terra a great debt of gratitude for so graciously allowing me to dedicate so much time away from home to my passion for this game and these young people.
GO CHARGERS!!!
With love & gratitude,
Michael "Gordo" Gordon

Don McGatlin, Running Backs

Coach McGatlin has a long and distinguished history as a football coach and is the father and Chief Inspiration to Chatfield’s Head Coach, Bret.  Coach "Mac"  was a 2-time State Championship Coach for Football and 3-time State Champion for Track at Green Mountain High School before leaving his ranch in Lakewood to “retire” in a more sprawling ranch in Rush, Colorado.  Coach Mac also hosts the CSH Freshmen each year for a life-changing retreat "Coyote" camp.

Wes Keene, Varsity Assistant

I am a 1983 Graduate of Belleville East High. 2 yr Varsity Letterman 1988 Graduate of Murray State 4 year letterman.
Proud father of 3 Trey, Kailey and Dalton (senior Chatfield Senior High Virginia Tech commit), and a lovely wife of 20 years Stacy!

Dan Shaffer, Varsity Assistant

This is my 12th year coaching football here at Chatfield.  I have coached in all 3 phases in the past, but am excited to be involved on the offensive side of the ball this year.  I graduated from Green Mountain High School in 2000, where I was fortunate to win a State Championship playing for long-time legendary coach Don McGatlin (check the sidelines for the guy in the cowboy hat).  I was also honored to be selected as a team captain and play fullback for Fisher Deberry at the United States Air Force Academy from 2000-2004 where I earned my BS in Management.  Since graduating I've worked with nuclear missiles in the Air Force, spent 6 years at Lockheed Martin, spent 2.5 years as a consultant, and currently work for an IT Security firm located downtown.  The coaches listed above and others before them had a profound impact on my life and helping me develop into who I am today.  This the reason I coach.  I firmly believe that the lessons learned while playing football can help our young men develop into the husband, fathers, and leaders our country needs in the future.  Other than football, my beautiful wife Tara and two young daughters are my biggest passions in life.  As coach Deberry would say...Faith, Family, and Football.  These are the priorities I seek to live my life by.  Lastly, football season is a lot of hard work for the coaches and players, and we can't get where we want to go without your positive support.  Thanks for being there to provide that for us.  Looking forward to a great season.  Go Chargers!

Mike Eismont, Running Backs

This will mark 4th year as the Receivers Coach. I graduated from Green Mountain HS in 1997. I played Football and ran Track. In HS I was a first team All Conference WR and Cornerback and all conference track.  I then attended Western State University. I have a career in Oil and Gas as a Pipeline Analyst that I enjoy. I have a 7yr old son full time that started 2nd grade this year. I truly want o give back to the program and teach these young men life lessons through football. Those HS years were building blocks in my life and they made me into who I am.  I want them to be ahead in life mentally. I want to teach them to believe in themselves. I'm blessed to be a part of this program.

Westin Kieschnick, Varsity Assistant

I coach defensive line and work to implement the team's strength and conditioning program. This year marks my 5th year with the football team. I am passionate about sport and its potential to positively impact the lives of young people. My passion for youth development extends well beyond the football field and into the classroom. I worked as either a teacher or school leader for 14 years prior to transitioning to my current role as Senior Fellow for one of the nation’s largest publishing firms. My most important roles are as husband to my wife Molly and father to our two children Everett and Charlotte. The love and support of my wife allows me to coach and mentor young men so that in some small way I can give back to a community I love. Be on the lookout for my kids on game nights. Everett will be the one running around looking for someone to tackle. Charlotte is the one running from Everett. They are my world, so if you see them…please send them back to their mother. She’s loud and probably wearing a button with my face on it. You can’t miss her. Go Chargers!

Michael Freeman

Coach Freeman is a Chatfield Senior High School alumni, former captain and quarterback.  He went on to play college football at Occidental College in California before transferring to CU Boulder. As a Buff, Coach Freeman was a member of the 1989 and 1990 teams.  The 1990 team was AP National Champion.  After college, Coach Freeman returned to Chatfield as a varsity coach with head coach Bob Beaty and then head coach Keith Mead.  In his ten years coaching at Chatfield, Coach Freeman was the defensive backs/ receivers coach as well as the defensive coordinator in his later years.  After a twenty five year career in Jefferson County as a teacher, coach, principal, and community superintendent, Coach Freeman is back to his first love- COACHING.

I am fortunate to be apart of this great program, learn from the best coaches in Colorado, as well as be involved with a supportive and enthusiastic community. Lets have a great season Chargers!

Scott Baliko, Freshmen Assistant

This will be my third year coaching with the Chatfield Freshman Football team. My first two years have been very fun and enjoyable getting to know and watching these young boys develop into young men. I grew up in Michigan playing many sports. I was part of the 1991 2B Farmington Hills Harrison State Championship Team. After high school I lived in Maine and was a commercial fisherman where I met my wife, Sue. After the fishing industry started to fall apart. My wife and I moved back to Michigan where I was a commissioning engineer in the Auto Industry traveling the world overseeing the installation of many different auto plants. After my daughter Sierra was born in 2001 my wife and I  chose to make a change and move to Colorado where I still worked in the automation industry. In 2011 I was diagnosed with MS and unfortunately I was forced into an early retirement. I want to thank Bret McGatlin and his staff for allowing my family and I to be apart of this great program. Thanks to my wife Sue and daughter Sierra for understanding the long hours it take to help make this program be successful. Go Chargers...
